Cob, Draught, Sport Horse or Thoroughbred?

  • Irish Cob – compact and strong with heavy feathering and mane, often coloured; a steady leisure and driving horse.
  • Irish Draught – larger and more athletic with little feathering; the traditional all-round farm horse.
  • Irish Sport Horse – typically an Irish Draught × Thoroughbred cross, bred for jumping and eventing.
  • Thoroughbred – the lightest and fastest, bred for racing; more sensitive and usually better for experienced riders.

Piebald and skewbald

In British and Irish terminology, “piebald” usually means black and white, while “skewbald” means white combined with any other colour (such as bay or chestnut). Together they are called “coloured”. Terminology varies by country and studbook.
