Breed history
The Arabian is among the oldest documented breeds; Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula bred it for centuries and carefully preserved pedigrees. From the 18th century Arabian stallions strongly influenced European breeding – including the creation of the Thoroughbred. The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) was founded in 1970.
Genetics & colouring
The population divides into historic strains (e.g. Egyptian, Polish, Russian, Crabbet). Breeders now use DNA tests to detect inherited disorders described in the breed – such as cerebellar abiotrophy (CA) or SCID – and can avoid them in mating decisions.
Is this breed right for me?
- What will I use the horse for – leisure, sport, driving, work?
- Do its size and temperament suit my experience and build?
- Do I have suitable stabling, grazing and time for daily care?
- Will I arrange a vet pre-purchase examination?
Care considerations – general
Every horse needs vet-guided parasite control, vaccinations, dental checks, hoof care and feeding matched to its workload and condition. Breed alone does not determine an individual horse's needs.
