Travelling with a horse in Czechia: transport, passports and overnight stabling

A summary of the official sources listed below, not legal advice. Rules change – always check the current version.

Horse passport

According to the Czech State Veterinary Administration (SVS, 2008), an owner travelling with a horse within Czechia to sports events, shows or gatherings only needs the horse passport. Only healthy animals may be moved; SVS then listed equine influenza vaccination and, for horses over two years, an equine infectious anaemia test (valid two years), recorded in the passport.[3]

This is an older notice – confirm current requirements with your vet or the regional veterinary administration before travelling. Travel to other countries is subject to further EU rules not covered here.

Moving your own horse vs. using a carrier

SVS (2005) stated that owners moving a privately kept horse in their own trailer do not need to register as carriers. Welfare rules still apply: on journeys over eight hours the horse must have feed, water and rest.[2]

Anyone transporting animals as part of a business falls under Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005. SVS publishes the forms for carrier authorisation and the journey log, which is required for long journeys over 8 hours.[1][4]

Overnight stabling

We did not find a general official rule on stabling a visiting horse that we could cite, so we do not state terms here. Always agree availability, price, paddock, feed and any documents directly with the stable in advance.
