Breed history

The Friesian is among Europe's oldest breeds and comes from the Dutch province of Friesland. The royal KFPS studbook was founded in 1879. In the early 20th century the breed nearly died out – only three stallion lines remained – and was rebuilt through careful breeding.

Genetics & colouring

The breed standard requires a black coat without white markings (a small star is tolerated on mares). The closed population has limited genetic diversity; the KFPS therefore tests approved stallions for breed-specific inherited defects such as hydrocephalus and dwarfism.

Is this breed right for me?

  • What will I use the horse for – leisure, sport, driving, work?
  • Do its size and temperament suit my experience and build?
  • Do I have suitable stabling, grazing and time for daily care?
  • Will I arrange a vet pre-purchase examination?

Care considerations – general

Every horse needs vet-guided parasite control, vaccinations, dental checks, hoof care and feeding matched to its workload and condition. Breed alone does not determine an individual horse's needs.

General information, not veterinary advice. Consult your vet or an equine nutritionist.
